Just picked up the game for PS3 yesterday and it's a hoot.

The graphics are awesome. In the start of career mode, you drive a loaned M3 coupe and you can actually read the home page for the iDrive screen. If you rear end a car ahead of you, their tail lights shatter, and if you lick someone good they can spin right in front of you.

The sounds are just as cool in my opinion. The engine noise is specific to each car; way more so than GT5 Prolouge. Sliding into the gravel pits is cool sounding but obviously not the quickest route. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Anyone else who has it, lets here what you think.

I have it, and it is everything I expected from it. I've been waiting for it for a long time since I used to be a huge car sim nerd and that game is made by the original Simbin team, the same responsible for the excellent GTR and GT Legend PC titles, both with legendary physics engines. If you play the game in the cockpit view and with pro physics + no assists I can ASSURE you that it is the most accurate racing simulation out there. Actually, it is VERY similar to GT legends: The physics engine is unforgivable, minute to the smallest detail. Brake in the middle of a corner? You're out. Brake when you're out of shape on corner entry? You're out. Bad throttle modulation mid corner? You slide. When you slide you loose time, or you pay a nice visit to the off-track beach. Lack of smoothness with throttle control? eh... you get it already.

The cockpit view is a treat. It shakes, it lives. All you need now is one of those racing rigs to simulate the G forces, a huge stereo turned up to 11 to simulate the noise of a race car and leave you deaf from the straight-cut gears, and a space heater to simulate the cockpit heat that keeps burning your crotch during all 30 laps.

The Demo should be out soon if it isn't already. I would advise anyone with a decent racing wheel controller to give it a try.

You can tune them alright. Or... "fine tune", aka adjust gear ratios, suspension settings, even add HP. You just have to finish the "game" or something.

Yes, NFS is not a game where you can just plug it in and drive like a pro. It is tough but that's part of what is so great. And I've always been a sucker for the cockpit views because it's what you would really see.

GT5 is a good game, but it's just not the most realistic driving simulator like it used to be marketed as far as I'm concerned. Although, the full version will FINALLY have crash damage.

Sergmx: I may have to post some game pics up to show you the difference between the two. As clean looking as Prolouge is, I think this is better still.

I've been having problems to upload my pictures from the NFS server. My red & white viper with ITBs always comes out blue when I download the picture. Do you have the same problem?

NFS:Shift is fucking GARBAGE!

I'm so happy that i downloaded and burned that bitch onto a DVD instead of wasting 60+ bucks on that horrible game.

...Granted, im more a Forza3 guy myself, and just D/L'ed the demo and thought it was outstanding. I wish Shift hadnt touted itself as a simulator. It Fails epically. As a "typical" NFS game, i guess its ok...

Did you try it in pro mode (or whatever they call it, I forgot) no assists, with a proper wheel? People tend to be turned off from the game because it not only is much worse with the gamepad, the game is too hard and the braking is too sensitive, and with assists on it drives like NFS Pro Street or some other junk like that.

It is an actual simulator, it will teach you how to actually race a car around a circuit, how to modulate the brakes correctly, and the importance of positioning the car for corner entry. Of course it has a learning curve since it is not your typical racing game. It takes a lot of practice. It is more in league with GTR2 and RFactor, maybe a little better, with better the simulation of weight transfer and the Michelin tire physics.

It is definitely not jump in & play like Forza 2, Forza 3, or GT5:P. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif)

I need to get a wheel. Steering is too hard with a joystick. Maybe that would help my game too. Just spent 2 hours trying different levels of assist and finally got it dialed in to where I don't look like I'm drunk in the replays.

I'm staying out of the simulator/not a simulator debate btw.

It is a sim, and a hardcore one. That was never questioned in the PC car sim circles.

GMotor2 is the engine in which Shift is based. It's the exact same engine of RFactor and GTR2. People found that you can import Shift cars/physics sets to GTR2 and it will still work just fine (and vice-versa.)

Spectre, get a wheel dude! You're missing out! A Logitech DFP should be going for dirt cheap on Ebay now that the DFGT came out. Grab that one, it's the ideal wheel for the PS3 and also works awesome with your PC. If you want a clutch, go Logitech G25 for cheapness or wait for the G27 for a little better quality and more buttons.

Xbawx peeps, wait for the new Fanatec Porsche wheel! It is shaped like a Porsche 911 wheel, it feels very solid and has a clutch pedal + awesome force feedback. Plus, it works with Shift, Forza 3 and also PC and PS3!

Yes, i did. And its junk. Gameplay is totally fucked. That is not how a real car handles and reacts to steering imputs...sorry. Forza 2 and 3 are just much better. My opinion.

I never quite got into wheels, moreso because i dont have the space in my room for a good setup. How does that one rate? I remember playing with alot of guys on Forza 2 LIVE and they'd say there wheels were at fault for their lackluster driving...saying its difficult to use. I always wondered what was the point then??

Me either, it's too hard to keep them in place. I don't want a whole table sitting in front of me just so I can have my wheel attached to it. I'm definitely a big Forza fan. Never played it on Live though, usually just against the computer. I don't know about the rest of you, but I play racing games so I can have some fun driving crazy fast cars that I will never get to touch in real life. If I wanted the car to feel and handle like it was real, I'd just go drive my real car. Too much realism removes some of the fun.

my buddy built a makeshift cockpit with some wood he had laying around that holds the wheel, pedals, & a racing seat. it's too fun in front of a 62 inch lcd! i should post a pic.

as far as shift goes, it's not a bad job for the nfs line. although i'd say prolog is more sim tho. i wish they'd make a new tokyo extrme racer.

how do you guys feel about nascar being in gt5?

The NASCAR part seems to be getting away from the game's roots. If someone wants to race stock cars, they're going to buy a dedicated title regardless IMO. I'm just glad they finally introduced crash damage. It seemed odd how Prolouge is so realistic looking, yet there is no damage.

I think NASCAR being there is Sony stretching to get a new group of people playing the GT series. I don't think it's going to work out the way they think it will. Most NASCAR big fans I know aren't interested in other forms of racing, except for maybe drag racing. Most people I know that are fans of other forms of racing (rally, ALMS, etc) aren't NASCAR fans.

I can hear the complaints now once all the hardcore NASCAR people try GT5... "WTF is this shit? Turning in more than one direction in a race? Who does that?" or "Why can that car turn better than mine, and that one be faster down the straight? Aren't all the cars in racing supposed to be exactly the same?"

You need to have practical experience w/ racing if you are going to rate the physics engine of the game. If you have never raced, you have no idea what really happens and IF a simulator is realistic or not. SO STFU. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

My favorite need for speed ever is still underground 2. My first NFS game was UG 1 I think, but UG 2... darn, I played that non stop when I was younger. Never beat it though! I have to download it right now, and I think I'm gonna go ahead and do just that! I wanna play it so bad right now!
