So, my Father asked me a good question while discussing buying a new vehicle...

"What car do you want?"

I honestly up to this point looked at nothing but prices. I think he has a point however. I understand that if I'm going to put 3-4yrs of payments down, I best enjoy what I'm driving. And to be honest I can think of some prefrences, and I pretty much have a price range in mind, but I do not have any one car that really comes to mind. I'm hoping I can get some suggestions.

I'd like to get back into something with a manual transmission. Although if the vehicle is right, I'd take an automatic. I'm ruling out RWD (snow-belt no brainer) and I don't have a strong prefrence between FWD or AWD/4WD. If the roads are that bad where I need 4WD I usually call off (and my Mother always refuses to drive in snow, despite owning a Liberty). I don't have a perticular brand prefrence, but I guess I'd rather a domestic car if the choice came up. I don't care about engine size or type... but I do need some ooomph for that monsterous mountain I drive up every day. The place is called Mountain Top after all.

The only other restrictions I am under is a budget of less than $10k and I don't want anything older than an 2003. I figure if I'm spending this much cash and time paying for it, I'd rather not get stuck in another decade-old car.

Feel free to suggest away, even if it's something I might have ruled out otherwise.

I think less than 10K limits your choices considerably. BUT... There are a lot of things you can look for if you're looking used, which you must be.

I would seriously test drive a few subaru's - I HATED them with a passion...before I drove one and fell in love with it. Now I wake up every day sad that I didn't buy that little beast of a grocery getter.

Are you in a hurry to purchase or nay? If nay, test drive whatever you can get your hands on so that you have a variety of experiences to further ease your decision.

I would do exactly as briar17 said, test drive as many as possible first to see what you like. 2003 and newer for $10K or less you can get quite a few vehicles. Most will probably be Eco-cars that dont have very many options.

I know most people dont like them, but ive considered the Scion TC's. I test drove alot of them and they have enough power to get around in the mountains (Live in the appalachian region), and come well equipped for the price of them. Not to mention they get pretty decent gas mileagel too. Im sure you can find a good lower mileage one for around your price range.

Yeah, right now it's no rush. The Jeep is still running for the time being. I mostly brought this up because my motorcycle has a few more payments on it, and I know I want a new computer this year, and I am tossing the idea of getting a loan to buy a new (used) car and finishing the motorcycle payments off. It's more of a want at the moment rather than a need. But I figure looking now lets me be agressive on finding a deal vs needing transportation immediately.

So it's really more of figuring what I'd like to start looking for and start peeling the eyes open for it. I definately like Subaru's for their abilities, but they do pull a premium around here (even the non-sporty models). I thought about a Wrangler as well for a manual AWD 6cyl, but they hold value like it's a crime not to. I know my brother/father got burnt buying a Wrangler for way more than it was worth for the condition it was in.

If thats the case, test drive cars whenever you see on that looks interesting (or has the right price tag). If you like it, write down the make/model. When you do decide to buy you can find ANYTHING on the internet. Whats that one website that has the commercial with the red mustangs? Autotrader.com or something?

Its a no brainer to me:
(IMG:http://www.schwab-kolb.com/jpg/dodge/dodge024.jpg)

FWD, available in 5 spd, the motor is plenty strong to get you up a hill.

Granted, this is located in my parents region of PA, but its a good example.

2005 Silver R/T, V6 5spd. 36,000 miles. $9500. Sounds choice.

heheh. A Stratus did cross my mind, and I guess I'm not totally opposed to it. But damn the 2.5 body (and those guages) is so ugly compared to the 2.0 body. Nonetheless, it's still something to think about.

I guess a ride to work with it in my mind got me thinking about cars I'd like. Some I've rode in, some not. Some are for the looks and some are for the performance. No consiteration on what they go for price wise.

Cars I Like, but am afraid they'd been beaten like a dead horse:
+03 PT Cruiser GT
+03 Neon SRT-4
+97 Wrangler
+00 Celica
+01 Impreza (any version)
+03 Legacy (any version)
+05 Cobalt SS

Cars I Like, otherwise:
+02 Liberty
+99 Grand Cherokee
+03 Baja
+01 Stratus/Eclipse <---might want to tag that in the beaten cars list lol!
+04 Mazda 3
+02 Mazda 6
+05 Ford Fusion (and it's siblings)

It's a start. Like I said...the rush to get a new ride is non-existant. I'm just starting to look for what I'd like to persue. Odds are I'll start disqualifying some of these vehicles for one reason or another as time passes.

Our PT Cruiser has held up very well. Plenty of power (150) for an N/A 4 cyl. I would recommend one. The Mazda's are also very good cars.

ANYTHING but the PT cruiser (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

i mean, i'm a big automotive fan, and i dont despise many vehicles, but that one just gets under my skin.

eh... to each their own. just had to rant. i like the impreza/legacy/cobalt choices.

There are some nice Cobalts online, but none are the SS variants. I did stumble across a few 5th gen Nissan Spectra SE-R V-specs in the price range. I don't know much about them. At least tonight I started seeing more of what was out there for under 10k. I think I probably can get a decent car for the 7-10k range with under 60k on the clock.

I never cared for the white backround on any guage. I personally loved my 91 Firebird's guages. Black with the white numbers that glowed red at night. I don't care what the popular trend is... black gagues rock.

Have you thought about a Grand Prix? FWD, and it comes in a supercharged variant if you want performance.

My picks, in your price range, within 100 miles of your zip:

2004 Mazda 3S hatchback - 5 speed

2003 Saab 9-3 aero - loaded, 5 speed

2003 mazda 6S sedan - 5 speed

2006 pontiac G6 GTP Sedan - 6 speed

Would you ever consider a 3 GEEEEE? This one is pretty nice: 2005 Mitsu Eclipse GT

2007 Mazda Mazda6 s - 5 speed

2006 ION Redline Coupe, low miles

I really like the Saab and the Black 6s in particular.

The 6s is a great deal at that price. Not to mention it still has the balance of the 4/50 powertrain warranty and it is fully loaded.

Of course, I am a little biased at this time in my life. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

I just got an 09 caliber for $12k with about 11k miles on it. I'm sure a tad older car would be even cheaper. So far I love it in every way except looks. I'm getting about 26-27mpg in city, and 29mpg on the highway.

Hahah, I just realized this is coming up on a year later, and I'm still looking. I test drove a 07 Cobalt coupe with an auto and those 2.2's are balsy. I vaguely remember taking a Grand Am for a spin several years ago and it felt doggy as hell with the auto. I also test drove a simalar Cobalt sedan with the 5-speed and felt un-impressed. There's not alot on the used market round here...most of it is junk. Although, it's nice being in the "I don't need a car today" position. I can walk away from all the dealers if I don't like it.

I must admit, I do really want a stick, but there's a 03 Grand Am GT1 for $5500 that is catching my eye. DAMN YOU RAM AIR PACKAGE!!!
