I'm contemplating on buying a car in NYC. Has anyone done this before? What are some things I need to do to protect myself and the seller?

I have never done it. Is there someone you trust that could go see the car? Maybe one of us here? What if you flew there, bought it and drove back? I'd help, but I'm barely closer than you are. You're laying out a ton of money, so be very careful. Hopefully someone has a better idea than mine. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif)

Just cover the basics. Get a bill of sale in writing and notarized. Make sure everything is filled out and spelled correctly on the title. I would also take it to the dmv and get temporary plates before you leave. I bought both my cars in PA roughly 3 hours away, so I've been through it a couple times. If you want, I can meet you in the city if you want backup.

That's what I am afraid of. I don't want to buy a car completely blind.

Anyone live close enough to NYC? I know Anthony is the closest.

Oh, are you going to NYC in person? I personally wouldn't buy a car without seeing it in person, especially a private one. There are too many things that can go wrong over the interwebs.

You have so many days off of work I think you should make the trip up there. Get a 1-way flight and rent a car for a day, take the car to a mechanic, and make the sale if everything's good!
I'll ask Charles/finese49ers how he's done it in the past on facebook today. I really think you should go with that car, it'll be a nice upgrade in many ways.

Paying the $1000 or whatever it is for a flight, food, lodging, rental car, etc... to go see it in person, have it evaluated, and everything will save you money in the long run to either buy the car or know what's wrong and to offer less on the spot to justify the sale. Otherwise who know's how much may go wrong in the first year or something if you don't?

*edit - messaged Charles

Directly from Charles
QUOTE
Tell your friend to get detailed pictures of every angle of the car that he would like to see. Also talk on the phone directly with the seller. Most importantly I'd say if he decides to buy the car in person to make sure he is paying with cash instead of a check or money order, this way when he sees the car and there is something he sees that wasn't already disclosed he can negotiate a lower price and therefore keep some money in his pocket. Every used car I've ever bought was out of state except for my last one, some from dealers but mostly from private sellers. Obviously you know that you're never going to know the exact condition of the vehicle until you see it, examine it and drive it in person. So with that in mind this person will have to have the mindset that he may be wasting money on a trip back and forth if the car proves not to his liking and has to be prepared to take the loss. I flew to Chicago to buy my first EVO (one way ticket) and although I was pretty confident the car was described as advertised and would make it back driving it home I also in the back of my mind was prepared to come home empty handed but of course everything worked out as I drove that EVO home from Chicago the same day and never had an issue before I sold it. I brought tools and my OBDII scanner with me on the plane ride out there so in case something happened on that long ride back I would have something to help get me out of the jam. Buying cars online is risky as the buyer definitely has more to lose, you just have to do all you can and hope for the best but be prepared for the worst.
