Last night I was coming home from work, went to turn onto a road and hit an ice patch and slid into a curb doing about 15mph.
My front wheel was the only thing that hit the curb, but now there is a grinding/rubbing noise when the wheel is spinning. As far as I can tell nothing looks visibly messed up besides some scrapes on the rim itself. Does is sound like the wheel hub/bearing? I don't have a mechanic as we work on all our cars, but should I take it to a shop? This post has been edited by gplayer12: Dec 14 2013, 09:48 AM |

I would start with taking the wheel off and inspecting. I would think it would be apparent as to whats wrong when you take the wheel off..

I vote crushed bearing. I was thinking that myself, however the couple wheel bearings I have ever seen go bad lock up the tire. It doesnt click, it simply breaks and doesnt allow the wheel to spin.. Keep in mind though I work only on my friends and my own cars, have not seen everything.. Id think hitting a curb at any sort of speed would bend several components that will not be completely fixed until you replace the entire suspension setup in that corner. However, I am no suspension expert either.. |

However, I am no suspension expert either.. It could be the axle or the whole strut assembly, something is out of line and rubbing, like rotor on dust shield, rotor on pads, tire or wheel on something. Given the leverage and where he said the sound is coming from, I figured the bearing is most likely. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif) |

Could be tie rods as well. Definitely worth a closer inspection

Well we figured it out. First we changed the wheel hub and the sound got alot quieter but it was still there. So we started inspecting further and noticed that one of the brake pad clips was rubbing the rotor. We bent it back into place and the
sound has be nonexistent since. Granted I do need to replace my tie-rods, that's for another time. |

You still have a misalignment, don't let it go too long, it'll fuck up other things soon. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif)

Small issues become big ones over time. My sway links crapped out and I waited to replace them. The broken links caused my struts to wear faster, the struts going bad caused extra wear on the toe arm bushings. A $50 repair turned into $1,000 very fast. Those are all wearable parts and probably needed servicing anyway. Please explain how broken links cause struts to wear out? Struts take a beating even with good links. And rubber bushings dry rot and just wear out over time. Your car is 11 years old and likely has a few miles on it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dunno.gif) |

Links were bad, seperate issue from Struts and Toe Arms. Dodge tech that helped me replace it all quessed that one wearing the other was why they all crapped out at once. Probly all right on the line and the one failure pushed the other over the tipping point. Anywho.. The point I was trying to get at was fix the issues now, before the added strain of a failed part pre-maturely wears another part out. But as you said Daes, these cars are all at LEAST 9-10 years old. Time to replace stuff if it hasn't been already. |

Tie rods are VERY important parts. They are ball joints. What happens when ball joints fail on the interstate? You crash. Get them replaced asap along with an alignment. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) I had a 1996 T-Bird, within 1 block of leaving the highway, a lower ball joint popped. At 35 mph, no biggie. At 70+ mph, I wouldn't be posting this. |
