Before I put the bike away for its winter nap, I just had to hit the Tail of the Dragon. I had vacation from 11/19- 11/27, and was headed to visit family in PA Sunday, so I chose Friday the 20th to go. Decent temp, blue skies, no traffic.

A few pics:
Pretty boring turn, but this was where the only photographer was standing that day,

and for OuttaFokus- this is all I could do on a cold day with tires that arent in their prime. Chicken strips will be gone next summer (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

LOL. Nice. To be honest, depending on your riding style, you could still have chicken strips and be leaned over almost dragging knee. At least you dont have chicken sandwiches anymore (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Been tinkering on the bike this winter

-Installed 35w 5000k HIDS. Not ricer blue, just nice clean white
-Niteshaded the front turn signals
-Changed the gauge cluster to white LEDs. (Tiny little things)
-Installed new custom seat covers from HT Moto/Hydro Turf ( Goodbye gator skin)
-Did regular maintenance like oil change and its first spark plug change.
-Gave the belly pan plastics a good scrub and wiped everything down real good to get rid of the dirt (radiator hoses, wiring)

Sitting at 9012 miles right now. Picked it up with 4480 on it, so thats 4532 I put on, more than double the miles in less than 6 months.

Who's Malibu?

Looks like it could use a good hand wash and wax. If you have some cash left over, I would invest in some front and rear stands. You dont need anything fancy like Pitbull stands. I heard T-rex stands are good quality for the money.

http://t-rex-racing.com/catalog.php?item=9...3Fcategory%3D43
You might be able to find some cheaper.

I would give the tires a good scrub and just go over it really well.

What are the laws like in VA as far as licensing? Here in TN you dont get a permit, you go straight to taking your road test.

Enjoy it, be careful, and be sure to plan a trip down here!

It's a friends malibu, and yeah it needs a clean up bad. I'm going Wed to take the written and road test, so not sure what to expect there. And a trip is already being planned (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

DO yourself a favor... and READ THE BOOK. You should be able to get a motorcycle booklet at the DMV for free. Hang on to it for a week, and read it a few times. Really READ it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) Study the pictures closely. There are some 'tricky' rules for motorcycles, like which part of the lane to be in, in certain situations. I read the book a couple times, and got 28/30 right on the test. Mine was computer generated, and though most of it was really simple, they threw a few curve balls in there and try to trick you.

I wonder how the rules differ from down there from up here in PA. There really more concerned if you can handle the bike vs road rules. You should aparently know most of those from having a car licence. LOL!

I took the MSF basic course provided free from the state and if you pass the course, you get licenced. I then took the Advanced riders course last summer... that was fun. I left alot of my cruiser's floorboard there with all the dragging I did. hehehe

I need new tires... I don't even think I broke 10k yet, but the stock 'stones blow ass on my C90. Time for some Dunlop love. And if I don't go crazy on car shopping I'm feeling a Fuel Injection Controller setup is due for the bike.

I know in PA my friends had to do a pretty involved road test. I know they had to do figure eights.

In TN, you can either do the MSF course, or schedule a road test. No permit or anything. I played around at work on my buddies cbr1000rr, and took the test on it, which involved riding 1/16 a mile up the road, turn around, and come back into the license center, while the lady stood there.

Yeah... the test is about skills and does involve a figure 8. And if I recall, the box is something like 12 feet wide (two parking spaces by two parking spaces). And if you can't make that sort of turn, you probably don't belong on a bike. The Advanced riders course shrinks the box down even further! I can tell you my dad on his Goldwing and 54 hard on the body years still made the smaller box figure 8. I am not sure what other things they made you do if you just go test. The MSF class had 165 degree turns and stopping exercises.

Back when I went for my permit, all you had to do was show up with a check made to penndot for $10 with a form filled out. Now there's an actual written test. I recall the guy at the counter telling me "Now don't go kill yourself!" as he handed me the permit. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

It looks good. You've gotta lose the tank decal though, it sticks out too much. I say either get everything still bare aluminum powdercoated (rims, sprocket, clutch cover, brake rotors) black so it all fits in, or start getting really good at polishing and go nuts. My friend had a ZX11 he did that to over the winter and the bike was phenominal. He put a polishing wheel is his apartment, it took a while

The tank decal is actually clearcoated! Can you believe that crap?? Id have to repaint the whole tank. I did get black decals for it, ill see how they lay on top.

There isnt anything 'silver' on the bike besides the exhaust. The wheels are gunmetal, the sprocket is grey, the clutch cover and stator covers are bronze. The rotors could use some love though.

A friends of mine owns a 92 GSXR 600 with polished frame and other parts and it looks great, but hes always complaining about upkeep. I like to wash, then ride with minimal upkeep. If I wanted to clean more than I ride, I woulda bought a Harley (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

Looking good. Looked like 2ct tires? you can always judge someones riding style by the front tire. Its easy to get the rear leaned all the way over, but even a good track day is hard to get the front edge to edge.

If youre looking for something to get around on, the new Ninja 250's got a facelift and get 65mpgs. There are a few used ones on the local craigslist for less than $3k. Insurance wouldnt be bad either.

Nope, they are the regular Pilot Powers. They are super cheap right now, but grip like glue.

Wow, its been a while. So I wrecked the bike in April 2011. Someone stopped in front of me thinking I could read minds and wanted me to pass them. I high sided at about 20 mph; dented tank, a few scratched fairings and a separated shoulder for myself. I did a little body work and tried my hand at automotive paint, and am happy with the outcome. Color is Cadillac Diamond White.

Right after wreck:
(IMG:http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k100/Bekistan20/2005%20Ninja%20636/Wreck.jpg)

I can Powder coat now, so I did the rear brake, clutch cover, stator cover, wheels and various other mods over the winter, along with paint.

Thanks! I became friends with the owner of the Dragon photography company 129slayer (outside of the Dragon), and he let me pick a few out that I liked and he hooked me up with them. That day I sat down with him while he took pics of the cars and bikes and its pretty cool.

I love that color. Ive been working at a GM dealer the past few years and every vehicle that would come in that color looked just amazing. It is similar to the color of our cars as well i think.

I say do the entire wheel! I've been thinking about doing that to cut down costs for my wheels I've got.

Thanks guys. I love the color and am really happy with the way it came out considering it was my first paint job. 3 coats base, 3 coats pearl, and 3 coats clear.

Ive had a few people suggest that, but I really like the "time attack" wheel scheme.

Its a subtle hint of red, while my decals have a red "R", and my rear shock spring is red. Its just 1/8" pinstriping, it really cheap and removes easily. (IMG:http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k100/Bekistan20/2005%20Ninja%20636/2012-04-08_18-05-56_HDR.jpg)

Downloaded an "HDR" app on my phone, and got some cool results.

You're so good at DIY stuff! Looks very professional! It's past time for me to join the two wheel club...

Hey Dan I've got a bike question (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

What are the big differences between a 2006 Ninja 636 and a 2006 Ninja 650R?
I've always really liked the 636's but recently started seeing a lot of nice looking 650R's in my area for cheaper, I'm assuming there's a reason why that's so?

The ZX6R is considered a "supersport".
The 650r is still a sportbike, but is more geared to sport touring with its more upright seating position. Its a V-twin with roughly 70 hp, compared to the 4cyl in the 636 with about 110hp. The forks are conventional (old technology) which may be why its cheaper too. On the forums they are VERY popular and people put a ton of miles on them. I love the frames on them especially how you can see the rear shock.

Yea that's what caught my eye too. The aesthetic look of the frame and wheels just looks amazing. Only thing I don't like about it is the front end. Saw a black and red 650R from this craigslist ad and just fell in love with the bike. I still really love 636's but they're just not really in my price range for when fall comes (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Thanks for the quick breakdown (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

The red frame and black plastics looks really good, but like you said the front end doesnt do it for me. Since it does have a nice frame, you could always make it a "street fighter" and pull the nose fairing and side fairings off and put a headlight up front.

They arent for everyone, but this is how it would look:

Makes it sort of look like a Buell, which I wouldn't mind but those get really pricey. That one is missing a little too much of it's plastics for me but I get it (or does the headlight plastic extend all the way down and that far back? Ugh... I'd rather have a mixture of both... Hmm
